A. Things like a cold or flu do not cross what is called the blood placenta barrier. There is also inate protective measures by the mother that prevent illness being passed on to the foetus.

How do i get rid of allergies and a bad cold?
Q. My allergies have been super bad the past 2 days and i think i have a cold too. my symptoms are: -running nose -sneezing -coughing/ soar throat -dry watery eyes(i cant keep them open either) -head ache -and a fever I've been taking advil cold&sinus but it didnt work at all. I need help FAST!!(b-ball game in 2 days, don't wanna be sick for it)
Asked by mmmmhmm! - Mon Sep 15 20:58:06 2008 - Allergies - 3 Answers - Comments
A. An antihistamine will relieve the allergy symptoms by drying out your sinuses. The sore throat and cough are probably being caused by post-nasal drainage, so an antihistamine should help those symptoms too. Benadryl is the best one, but it will make you very tired. Try Claritin or Zyrtec - both are non-drowsy and last 24 hours. Take tylenol or advil to help relieve the headache and fever. Good luck!

A. I used to live in Florida and when it gets cold, even if not as cold as it does elsewhere, then it really bugs you because it's a big difference from what you are used to. My parents live in Tennessee - where I am originally from - and I saw it didn't get out of the 20's today, which is rare. It looks like it is going to warm up again next week though. It's been cold here in Boston. It's been in the 20's when I go out to walk my dog and we are not even going out tonight because it's already 23 degrees. My roommates have told me it is a little colder than usual. So, I figure if I can make it through this winter then that is a very good sign. I am pretty sure I will and it's been an adjustment but I'm getting the hang of it! But, it's… [cont.]

How can you tell if you have the flu or just a really bad cold?
Q. I can't even move, my body aches, even my fingers and toes hurt. I've been running a temp of 101-104. I have this horrible cough and my chest hurts. My head is throbbing and I can't breath. I keep getting the chills. One second I'm hot the next I cold. I'm shivering as I type this. I don't think I've ever felt this sick. How do I know if it's the flu or just a really bad cold?

Q. My throat hurts when i swallow ,breathe after running, cough and sneeze. I really want to do football this year but my cold is really bad. i also have a stuffy nose.

A. Look in your medicine cabinet, do you see Thera flu? very well then you will be at your try out tomorrow. But seriously, if you don't show up, you won't make the team. Show up even if you feel like sh*t, and show your coaches that even when you are weak and sick you still have heart and love for the game of football!

Everybody in my house has a really bad cold! How can i protect myself fron getting sick?
Q. every body is really sick and they all have really bad sore throats. and i just found out my sister has a fever! =/ how can i prevent catching cold or the fever?? please help. thanks.
Asked by Fresh - Thu Aug 6 22:26:41 2009 - Infectious Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments
A. First off, try to avoid close contact with everyone in the house. Don't share food or drinks, if you use the computer after someone who is sick wipe down the keyboard and mouse and wash your hands afterwards, etc. You can't wash your face and hands enough when you are around sick people, think about a hospital, they was their hands constantly! That's why... Also, to help your immune system to be it's strongest: Plenty of water and fruit juices - avoid tea and soft drinks, force yourself to drink OJ, Apple Juice, or just plain water... Lots of vitamin C, and a multivitamin with breakfast and dinner. Plenty of sleep. That's about all you can do. Good luck :)

Working in a charity shop with bad cold?
Q. I volunteer at a charity shop one day a week. I have it tomorrow but I have a bad cold which is resulting in me needing to sneeze every 5-10 mins or so and then holding it in before I have gigantic sneezes in quick succession. I work behind the till so I will have to handle people's clothes (mostly what we sell) and a lot of customers are elderly. Am I ok to go to work like this or would it be irresponsible of me? I have no idea.

A. take some anti histamines to help stop you sneezing. If its just an allergy then you wont infect anyone, if you feel sick dont go in cause you will infect people

I woke up with a bad cold yesterday and today my period came early? what do i do?
Q. Does anybody have any helpful remedies. I don't like to take pills when im on my period becuase i hardly ever cramp or feel bad. But this time it hurts really bad, i also don't want to mix pain relievers and cold medicine. so what are some remedies that can help both.

A. There's no problem with taking ibuprofen with cold medicine, as long as you aren't taking a combination cold medication. If there is no tylenol or ibuprofen in your cold med, you can take ibuprofen now. If there is tylenol in your cold med, wait 2 hours after taking it and take a couple ibuprofen. At this point, it may be better for you to skip the cold med (it helps with symptoms but doesn't cure the cold) and just take the pain med for your cramps for a day or two. Drink plenty of fluids. The oj that is fortified with calcium would be a good choice for you...Vit C may help with the cold symptoms (helps mucous membranes heal) and the calcium may help with your cramps (make it a habit to take in extra calcium before your period even starts) [cont.]

How can you tell whether it's bad cold, flu or pneumonia?
Q. I asked this in Infectious Diseases and didn't get any answers. I had pneumonia last year. I haven't been sick all this winter until now. It feels like a bad cold that I came down with last Friday. It started with sneezing, coughing and sore throat. How long does mucus stay in your eyes after a really bad cold?
Q. I had a really bad cold starting around Saturday. My body killed and I had a slight fever. I stayed home for a couple days and while I did I noticed this green stuff in my eye. It seems to be mucus from my sinuses were all terrible. My body is healed but I still have a stuffed up nose and even worse the mucus in my eyes still comes back when ever I fall asleep and it's the worse feeling in the world to wake up to. How long will this last?

A. Until your sinuses are not inflamed and producing extra mucus. Honestly unless a doctor says it's gone you may have allowed the respiratory infection to spread upward by being so sleepy.

Why does a bad cold cause me to gasp for breath in the middle of the night?
Q. When I get a REALLY bad cold, occasionally I'll wake up in the middle of the night unable to take a breath, or breath out, without EXTREME difficulty. It lasts about 30 seconds or so. My unprofessional guess is that post-nasal drip has triggered my epiglottis to close, but it's really scary and I'm not sure if that's the answer or not. What is it and what can I do about it?

Is it possible to get rid of a bad cold in less than one day?
Q. Hey everyonee soo tomorrow is my birthday and lucky me I got a really bad cold on Tuesday. I can't even breathe out of my nose! I'm coughing and sneezing and blowing my nose every 5 minutes! It sucks! I just want to be better by tomorrow! Or at least be able to get rid of most of the stuffed up nose I have. Any tips on how to make cold go away fast?
