What bathroom cleaning products are safe for acrylic?
Q. My landlord just had the "Bathroom Fitter" people come in and re-do our tub/tub walls with an all-one-piece acrylic wall and tub thing-a-majig. Anyway, on my old regular tile/grout walls I used to use Comet, Tylex and Clorox Cleanup to get it clean and kill any mold, but now I don't know what to use. I don't want to ruin the finish. The paperwork says to make sure you use a product that is safe for acrylic, but I was checking out some of the labels in the store today and hardly any of them specify whether or not they're safe for acrylic. Help!

How can i stop my bathroom extractor from leaking water in winter?
Q. Every winter our bathroom extractor drips dirty water in the bathroom, it's no small amount either, i'm aware it's condensation from the connected pipe in the loft but not sure how to fix it, any ideas boys and girls? The water/electric combination is a little worrying.

A. I'd suggest going to the hardware store and buying a heat tape. It's an electrical heater that's used to wrap around pipes to keep them from freezing. It should do the trick.

Q. I really need help. My bathroom is cold, everytime when I go in to have a shower, facial, it's torture. How to make my bathroom warmer? *I cannot turn the central heat hotter. I cannot stand the heat and the dryness. I have allergy. *I cannot bring a portable heater into the bathroom, it will cause electric shock and kill me ><! (and my bathroom is quite small, cannot fit in any big things, very tiny table) *My bathroom got a window, we close during the long winter. what else can I do to make my bathroom warmer? Is there some kind of light bulb that will make the bathroom warmer? is it sunlight bulb? Will the sunlight bulb give me a sun tan, I don't want sun tan. Any special light bulb that will produce heat, but not give sun tan?… [cont.]

A. You can buy heat lamp bulbs at any Wal Mart or Ag feed store. You can also buy an extension adapter that screws into your light socket so the bulb is not so close to your wall. I have one, I love it. I will keep the room warmer and will not give you a suntan.

How much would it cost to install a bathroom in a house?
Q. I currently own a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house and want to install another bathroom. I am planning on adding on to the house. Does anyone have an idea how much it would cost for plumbing, building materials for the new room, bathroom essentials (toilet, shower, sink etc.) and labor cost? If I forgot anything let me know!!! Thanks.

A. I had to replace my bathroom last year -- had to tear it out down to the ground, and it was $7000. Kitchens and bathrooms are the two most expensive rooms to do. If you have a Home Improvement store in your area, they, sometimes have a list of people who are working in the area -- as those folks have to buy their supplies someplace.

What is the minimal cost for bathroom expansion and renovation?
Q. My girlfriend and I are looking to purchase a home and we found a nice house in a great location; however, the bathroom is TINY and it is something I would want to renovate and expand prior to moving in. How would should a expect to spend to make simple, yet stylish renovations to the bathroom? I know this is a very vague question being that there are a ton of factors. I am just looking to get an idea of how much of an investment it would require on top of the down payment. Thanks!

A. This is a tough question full of variables but i'll say $3000. Keep in mind it may be more economical to make an entirely new bathroom somewhere else in the house (perhaps off the master bedroom) and leave the existing one alone.

A. For the first one: 1) Apply the toothpaste and start with the front teeth, then move towards the back. After that, open your mandible and brush the crowns of your teeth, and the back. You may want to also brush your tongue. 2) If you have any mouthwash, fill it up (doesn't need to be all the way) and swish it in your mouth for at least 30 seconds. Although I wouldn't go longer than a minute because I tried mouthwash for two minutes in my mouth and ended up causing a little bleeding (although may have been something with my mouth already). Cleansing your face- Turn on the facet and get some warm water on. This will open your pores. Try applying a little soap and then switch to cold water. Q. Im looking for a hotel in Japan and i came across a package that I really like. The package has two parts with different prices. Does anyone know the difference and why? crazi3 c: but why is the 'bathroom with a toilet' more expensive? Shouldn't the full bathroom be more expensive?

I'm putting a bathroom in the basement. Can I have the main electrical panel (circuit breakers) in it?
Q. Let me clarify- I am finishing my basement and drawing up plans. I plan to get it permitted. Unfortunately, the only place a bathroom would work happens to be in the area of the main electrical panel. If I enclose it in a closet accessible from outside the bathroom, it makes the bathroom too small. Is it possible to have the electric panel in the bathroom in an enclosed cabinet of some sort? (The bathroom will have a shower, so I don't know if moisture will be a problem). Suggestions would be much appreciated. My county adheres to the national building code, 2003 edition.

A. No, service disconnecting means (panels) shall not be installed in bathrooms.

What is causing my bathroom vanity lights and fan not to work?
Q. In my master bathroom (attached to master bedroom) I have vanity lights (only lighting in the bathroom), a fan, and one outlet. The fan and the vanity lights are separate units. Last night, there was a thunderstorm and lightning, but given the circumstances, I don't think it's causing my problem. Last night, I turned off my lights and fan, and when I attempted to turn them on again, they did not work. The outlet, which I believe would be connected to the same power source as the lights and fan, does work. I attempted to switch all the circuit breakers on and off to no avail. FYI the circuit breaker is for the entire master bedroom, or at least labeled as so; so I would assume it encompasses the master bathroom as well. My guess would be it… [cont.]

A. Do you have men or boys in your home? If so, the floors and walls around the toilet need to be cleaned regularly, as well as the toilet itself. You may need to replace the toilet seat and any bath mats or rugs that you have in the bathroom. If you have carpet around the toilet it should be cleaned with something that will neutralize the urine. I've found that spraying white vinegar on the carpet works well. The vinegar smell will dissipate as it dries and you can then clean the carpet with something a little more fragrant. Wall paper will also absorb urine and I've tried lightly spraying and wiping it with vinegar and it helps, but I've also had to completely strip the paper and paint the bathroom to get the smell out of the walls. Can I paint bathroom floor tiles & also the floor of the shower recess?
Q. I have painted over all the walls as well as the shower recess wall tiles and they look stunning. Just like having a new bathroom but I just need to do something with the floors (bathroom as well as shower recess)without having to pullup the vile tiles that are there. Plz help :) They are ceramic tiles and any help would be appreciated thankyou.
Asked by lynnejohansen - Mon Dec 29 05:54:54 2008 - Do It Yourself (DIY) - 4 Answers - Comments
A. The first question is what type of tile is on the floor? Ceramic, vinyl, wood? What is the shower recess made of? If its ceramic it is possible to coat it with an epoxy paint (of course over time you will have a wear pattern). If its vinyl you can either remove it or put a 1/4 inch thick layer of plywood and lay new tiles on to that surface. If its wood you will probably have you remove it (due to thickness) or strip and recoat it (paint or stain). True options are difficult due to lack of details

Cost to add a bathroom on the second floor, directly above the first floor bathroom?
Q. I am trying to estimate the cost to add a small bathroom with a sink, toilet, and corner/stand up shower on my second floor. The bathroom would be directly above a bathroom on the first floor - but would need walls. The ceiling and wall that the bathroom would be built up against already has wiring and electrical outlets. I'm in Portland, Oregon.
Asked by Katherine - Sat Jun 27 20:16:12 2009 - Decorating & Remodeling - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Adding a basic 6x8-foot bathroom addition starts around $25,000 and goes up depending on complexity, quality of fixtures, number of amenities and local labour rates, because of all these reason the above price can only be a guesstimate. Remodeling Onlin e pegs the price of a 6x8-foot bathroom addition at an average of $36,000 in the Midwest, $36,700 along the East Coast and $40,000 in the Western states. These prices are all-inclusive for projects using good- to high-quality materials, with work performed by a skilled and licensed remodeling company.

If I paint my bathroom black will it look too dark?
Q. I have a small bathroom with light yellow tiles in the shower and the botton half of the whole bathroom. I would like to paint the top portion of the whole room black. It is a kids bathroom and yellow and black is their school colors.. I am only worried that it will make it too dark for a bathroom and/or be hard to paint over when and if we want to change it someday. Advice please!

A. My advice is ... no on the black. Use a black shower curtain and black accessories, black towels, black window treatements ... and keep the yellow. Just the black of the accessories will be borderline overwhelming. Yes black is hard to paint over. If painting over black you need to use a few layers of primer, then paint. If thats okay with you ... go for it... use black.

If thats okay with you ... go for it... use black.

What color for my bathroom with forest green faux marble countertop?
Q. My bathroom has white vinyl flooring that looks like tile with some forest green diamond shaped inserts, plus it has a white vanity with a forest green faux marble countertop. White tiles on the bottom half of the walls with white walls up above, a green border inbetween. What would be a good accent color? I could remove the border between the wall/tiles. Its not a terribly big bathroom, not tiny, just not as big as they make them nowadays.

How to install bathroom cabinet onto a wall that is tiled with porcelain?
Q. Our bathroom is tiled entirely with porcelain tiles (30 cm by 60 cm), floor to ceiling. We want to install a bathroom cabinet above the sink, onto the wall. Is it safe to drill into the tile? Do we need a special drill? My dad is pretty good with handy work and he says we could drill int he grout between the tiles but I am not convinced! I want to do this the right way so please advise. Many thanks.

A. It should be easy to drill through the grout joint, but sometimes the place you need to drill is not at a grout joint. In this case you can drill through the tile. I recommend a diamond drill bit. You can buy one a lowes for about $15. They also make carbide tipped blades for ceramic tile, but porcelain tile is much harder and the diamond bit is better.

Bathroom remodeling, when should we have windows installed?
Q. We are planning on having our bathroom remodeled. We want to replace the bathroom window, replace the floor tiles, tile and paint the walls, and have a sink and mirror installed. Here's my question: do we have the window installed first before the other things or last?

A. You'll want to tile around the window and make sure it is well sealed so the window goes into the framing, then tile backer board, then the tile. Window first, in other words.
