In a professional kitchen setting, the term is used only for the one person in charge of everyone else in the kitchen — the "executive chef." TitlesA chef working with a tandoor oven, a cylindrical clay oven used in cooking and bakingBelow are various titles given to those working in a professional kitchen and each can be considered a title for a type of chef. Many of the titles are based on the brigade de cuisine (or brigade system) documented by Auguste Escoffier, while others have a more general meaning depending on the individual kitchen. Not all restaurants will use these titles as each establishment may have its own set guidelines to organization. Specialized and hierarchal chef titles are usually found only in fine-dining, upscale restaurants; kitchen-staff members at casual restaurants such as diners are more often called "cook" or "short-order cook". Chef de cuisine is the traditional French term from which the English word chef is derived. GNU Free Documentation License What is the difference between a sous chef and a commis chef? Q. Hi there, I'm looking for a job in the kitchen and constantly come across sous chef and commis chef and I am not totally sure of the difference. I know that they are both under the head chef but is there a difference? I read that a commis chef is the 'entry level position for the start of your career as a chef' but I thought that sous chef was the same? Also, are either of these suppose to have experience? Any help is appreciated. Many thanks Asked by chocolate_feast - Thu Aug 26 10:26:56 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments How much money does a chef make a year and what schooling is required? Q. Chefs can go to vocational schools to learn thier trade, or they can major in culinary arts or hospitality management at local community colleges. Some colleges have four year degree programs, but not many. Also, every branch of the US military has training programs for chefs and cooks, because of high demand. Chefs in the Coast Guard, Navy and Airforce especially will have better opportunities for training, due to the lack of mobility (They'll be on bases and ships… [cont.] Answered by Ayla - Wed Feb 20 15:54:07 2008 How do I become a pastry chef?
Q. I am 28, and have been a professional Web Designer for the past 7 years, but I really love to bake and I feel that I may want to pursue this as a career. I live in NH and would like to attend part-time classes as well as possibly apprentice/intern with a pastry chef. Any suggestions on schools/programs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
