Mucus Plug?
Q. I'm due in 2 days now with my first, and i've just lost what seems to be my mucus plug. I was told by a couple of people awhile ago that if its not tinged with blood, you haven't lost it all - and it doesn't mean anything to do with labor being soon. It was just a clear to yellowy ...mucus really. Has anyone lost their mucus plug(and have it clear), and gone into labor in the next 24 hours - few days?

A. I lost my mucus plug a little over a week before I was induced. I never went into labor. I had to be induced. The mucus plug can regenerate itself. It's not really an indicator of labor, it just means that things are working like they are supposed to. Mine was blood tinged, but I still never went into labor on my own. You could just be having alot of discharge. Your mucus plug looks alot like snot. (not to be gross) It's a little bit thicker than just a regular discharge. Also, it's usually not clear because it has been sitting there inside of you for a while "capping things off".

What is the difference between mucus plug and bloody show?
Q. I have heard that the mucus plug is not the bloody show and the bloody show can happen up to 24 hours before labor starts where as the mucus plug can be lost weeks ahead of time. Is this true? I always that that it was the same thing. Sorry I should have proof read. The last sentance should say I always thought that they were the same thing.

A. the mucus plug can come out with the bloody show. some women lose there plug for a while before labor starts. the mucus plug is just what is sounds like ...mucus. when going to the bathroom you may notice it is the toilet or when wiping, it is like snot and can have a lil blood with it. this can come out all at once or in pieces. the bloody show is like you are having a period and that means its time to have a baby and get to the hospital.the plug can start to come out 2 weeks before labor and the show happens 24 hours to a couple days before birth.

How long after losing mucus plug does labor start?
Q. I'm 39 weeks and I've lost my mucus plug with some bright red spotting afterwards. I was at the doctor Tuesday and she said I had no significant dialation and now I've lost the plug. Does this mean I've dialated and labor will start soon?

A. My wife didn't start pre-labor for a few days, but I suspect it varies a lot from woman to woman.

How long does it take for your mucus plug to pass?
Q. I am 8 months pregnant and on Thursday I went to the doctor and he told me I had passed my mucus plug and I am 2 cm dilated. About 10 minutes ago I went to the bathroom, and I peed. When I wiped myself there was a little spot of what looked like mucus. Is my mucus plug still passing? This is my first pregnancy so I'm confused.

A. i was reading on google that sometimes if a woman that is pregnant has alot more discharge than normal she may not notice the mucus plug passing... because it varies in look... mucusy, watery, tinged with blood, brown, pink... its all different. but if the doc said that you "passed" it already then thats that i guess...

What does the mucus plug really look like?
Q. I am 37 weeks pregnant, but about 3 weeks ago I thought I lost my mucus plug. How do you know if you lost it. I have always been told that it is really thick, sticky, and white or pinkish. Does it always have to have blood in it, or can it be just white? May I have only lost part of my mucus plug since there was no blood in it. I know it wasn't normal discharge because it looked like someone took pancake mix or something like that and just dropped some into my undies. Does anyone else have an idea. I already have told my doctor though.

A. That was your mucus plug! It "can" be twinged with blood, but not always. It does not mean you are in labor necessarily, just getting closer! Yea! You can actually google images of mucus plugs, if you have a strong stomach! That was a perfect description (pancake mix) Best wishes. ETA - if you do lose it early, it does "grow" back about 24 hours after. So you may see it again.

What does it feel like when mucus plug falls out?
Q. I know you don't always feel it, but when you do what does it feel like? Also, is it always a large glob, or could it just be like mucus like discharge. I have a lot of discharge like that, but haven't experienced any globs. Did anyone not even realize it when the mucus plug came out? Thanks for your answers. Also, how long afterwards did labor start for you?

A. I started losing my mucus plug on early Sunday morning. I didn't know I was losing it until I wiped and saw a huge brownish glob of mucus on my tissue paper. After that it was less but I was still losing it. It took until Tuesday for it to all go away and now I have a lot of discharge. It's been a few days that I've lost my MP and have yet to go to labor.

How to tell the difference between Discharge and Mucus plug?
Q. 34 weeks pregnant and have been having lots of thick discharge, how do I know its not the mucus plug slowly coming away? Whats the difference?
Asked by Robyn's Mommy - Fri Dec 7 05:46:49 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the mucus plug is more like one or two big globs of goo that has the consistency of an un-cooked egg white (stringy)or even thicker. It is usually a yellowy-white colour with pink tinges through it (from the blood when it comes away from the cervix) Normal discharge is noticeably different because it doesn't have the stringy-ness or isn't big globs like the mucus plug. It can still be quite thick but is usually easily wiped away. The mucus plug will be stringy and hard to wipe away. I hope that gives you some insight!

How long after loosing your mucus plug did you go into labor?
Q. I know every pregnancy is different but I just want an idea of how soon after? I was reading a few different websites this morning and all of them said labor usually starts a week or 2 after the lose of the mucus plug. Is that true for you? I just lost mine this morning around 3:30am. And I am one day shy of 36 weeks if that matters. Also how far along where you?

A. I lost my plug about 3 days before, i lost it on my due date, but every pregnancy is different my friend lost her 2 weeks before her due date and went 2 weeks over and had to be induced. You will experience lots of pain in your back and stomach over the next couple of weeks its your body getting ready for labour. Its hard to say when you will go into labour it could be anytime or it could be a few weeks yet, just relax and keep an eye on those pains to see if they get stronger and if they do phone the hospital. Good luck and congrats X

How do you know when you lose the mucus plug? And what is it?
Q. This is my first pregnancy and I've heard about the mucus plug here on yahoo answers. I've been reading what to expect when you're expecting every month but I haven't gotten to that part. I'm 28 weeks and have a lot of white discharge sometimes. It is thicker than regular vaginal discharge and smells stronger. Is that the mucus plug??? Should I be concerned? I will talk to my doctor about this.

A. When you lose your mucus plug, it may be a little or a lot of gel like material. It will may be in a glob, stringy or just wetness. The mucus plug is clear to yellow-brownish in color, but may also be pinkish.Losing your mucus plug does not necessarily mean you are in labor. This can occur up to two weeks before labor begins. This can also occur right as labor is beginning. You will have to wait and see if you have any other signs of labor. Such as your water breaks or you begin to have contractions.

How much longer after losing your mucus plug do you go into labor?
Q. My fiance lost her mucus plug yesterday and the day before that she went to the doctor and she said she was dilated to a 2 and was seventy percent face.
Asked by master_blaster - Sun Jul 19 08:23:38 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, there's no straight answer I'm afraid. The body is actually capable of making a new mucus plug within 24-48 hours, which could mean that labour is a long way off still. However at 70% effaced, the chances of it lingering more than a week are slim. Basically, the plug is like a cork; when dilation begins, the cork can slip out. However, if dilation stops at 2cm, the body simply makes a slightly bigger cork to fill that gap. It can happen a few times before the baby then decides it's had enough and it's show time! Good luck.

A. It depends on the woman. Everyone's pregnancy is different. You could go into labor now, or it could be another few days. It all depends on what your body feels like doing. Best of luck to you!

How long will it take to go in labor after losing your mucus plug?

A. Sounds like part of your plug. When I lost a part of mine(38 weeks), I started having contractions and two hours later went right into labor. But remember everyone is different because I have friends who lost their plug a week before they went into labor. Good luck!! I am sure you are close.

A. Some women will lose their mucous plug or part of their mucous plug weeks before they go into labor. Losing your mucous plug does not always mean labor will begin shortly. Keep in mind that even if a woman has begun to dilate, it may be weeks before she actually goes into labor. However, if you notice blood tinged mucous before your thirty-sixth week of pregnancy or if you see more than a few spots of blood, notify your doctor right away. Having sex or a vaginal exam can disturb your mucus plug and cause you to see some bloody discharge even when labor isn't going to start in the next few days. The pains you are feeling are more than likely Braxton Hicks contractions. Braxton Hicks can signal pre-labor, during which time your cervix ripens… [cont.]
