Mucus Plug?
Q. I'm due in 2 days now with my first, and i've just lost what seems to be my mucus plug. I was told by a couple of people awhile ago that if its not tinged with blood, you haven't lost it all - and it doesn't mean anything to do with labor being soon. It was just a clear to yellowy ...mucus really. Has anyone lost their mucus plug(and have it clear), and gone into labor in the next 24 hours - few days?

A. I lost my mucus plug a little over a week before I was induced. I never went into labor. I had to be induced. The mucus plug can regenerate itself. It's not really an indicator of labor, it just means that things are working like they are supposed to. Mine was blood tinged, but I still never went into labor on my own. You could just be having alot of discharge. Your mucus plug looks alot like snot. (not to be gross) It's a little bit thicker than just a regular discharge. Also, it's usually not clear because it has been sitting there inside of you for a while "capping things off".

What is the difference between mucus plug and bloody show?
Q. I have heard that the mucus plug is not the bloody show and the bloody show can happen up to 24 hours before labor starts where as the mucus plug can be lost weeks ahead of time. Is this true? I always that that it was the same thing. Sorry I should have proof read. The last sentance should say I always thought that they were the same thing.

A. the mucus plug can come out with the bloody show. some women lose there plug for a while before labor starts. the mucus plug is just what is sounds like ...mucus. when going to the bathroom you may notice it is the toilet or when wiping, it is like snot and can have a lil blood with it. this can come out all at once or in pieces. the bloody show is like you are having a period and that means its time to have a baby and get to the hospital.the plug can start to come out 2 weeks before labor and the show happens 24 hours to a couple days before birth.

How long does it take for your mucus plug to pass?
Q. I am 8 months pregnant and on Thursday I went to the doctor and he told me I had passed my mucus plug and I am 2 cm dilated. About 10 minutes ago I went to the bathroom, and I peed. When I wiped myself there was a little spot of what looked like mucus. Is my mucus plug still passing? This is my first pregnancy so I'm confused.

A. i was reading on google that sometimes if a woman that is pregnant has alot more discharge than normal she may not notice the mucus plug passing... because it varies in look... mucusy, watery, tinged with blood, brown, pink... its all different. but if the doc said that you "passed" it already then thats that i guess...

Q. Hiya ladies, Im 36w3d pregnant, yesterday and today i have been loosing small amounts of my mucus plug. Its there 3-4 times a day when i go to the toilet. I know it can still be weeks until i go into labour. How long after starting to loose your mucus plus did you go into labour?

A. My contractions started less than 24 hours after i started to lose my mucus plug, although i lost alot more when i was in full on labour in hospital. My show happened after a sweep though and i was 11 days over due. Although it doesn't mean your labour will start today or even tomorrow, it is a definite sign that things are happening, it won't be long for you at all. Wow i just realised you are only 36 weeks, have you contacted your midwife? i would let her know just to be on the safe side, although you aren't far from 37 weeks, a baby isn't considerd full term until 37 weeks (in the UK anyway). Good Luck with everything! x

What does it feel like when mucus plug falls out?
Q. I know you don't always feel it, but when you do what does it feel like? Also, is it always a large glob, or could it just be like mucus like discharge. I have a lot of discharge like that, but haven't experienced any globs. Did anyone not even realize it when the mucus plug came out? Thanks for your answers. Also, how long afterwards did labor start for you?

A. I started losing my mucus plug on early Sunday morning. I didn't know I was losing it until I wiped and saw a huge brownish glob of mucus on my tissue paper. After that it was less but I was still losing it. It took until Tuesday for it to all go away and now I have a lot of discharge. It's been a few days that I've lost my MP and have yet to go to labor.

Q. Im almost 36weeks pregnant . And i think im losing my mucus plug , cuz there is this neon green liquid always showing up on toilet paper. Its not super thick mostly thin and i have been having alot more secretion . Sometime it could be really neon green and at times it can be lightly neon green . Can it be my mucos plug?

A. Doesn't sound like it, but it could mean it's coming. Usually any type of green discharge means you need to see your doctor to be checked for infection, because it is not normal. It's not common for women to have any green show before losing the mucous plug.

Q. How soon after losing your mucus plug (clear, not the bloody show type) was it until you went into labor?

A. If I lost my mucus plug I never knew it. My Dr never pointed out to me that I lost it either. So I can't help you. I usually go into labor with no other signs...I won't be dilated or effaced (thinning of the cervix) and next thing I know I'm contracting 5 minutes apart...My water never breaks on it's own either (actually only about 10% of women have that happen). Good luck.

What does it look like when you lose your mucus plug?
Q. Can you lose it in parts or does it come out all together? I'm curious because yesterday I had a huge clump of white mucus come out when I went to the bathroom. I thought that the mucus plug had more brown or red to it as well as white? I'm 36 1/2 weeks. Could I have lost part of my plug?
Asked by well then - Wed Jun 3 17:04:02 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It looks like a great clump of snot. Sometimes it has some streaks of blood in it, sometimes not. You can lose all or part of it, and it can regrow, but if you've just lost it, you need to be careful not to have sex for a few days, so you don't get an infection. If the mucus plug has brown in it, like old blood, it's fine. However, if it is stained brown, or greenish, it may have taken on a meconium stain (baby pooped inside you), and that could mean the baby is in distress, so it's important to report that and see the doctor right away. If you are in the last week or two of your pregnancy, losing your mucus plug *usually* means you will go into labor within 24 hours. So walk a lot.

What does the mucus plug in pregnancy look like?
Q. I know that this is a disgusting question, but I am 34 weeks pregnant and just passed something that looked like a slug. It was white with streaks of brown in it. Could this be my mucus plug and if so, isn't it a little early to be passing it? Should I be calling my doctor right now or wait until the morning?
Asked by harakal1 - Fri Nov 13 00:16:42 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That would be part of your plug-it is normal to start losing it as early as 29 weeks. You do not have to call your doctor, just let them know that you lost some at your next app. I started losing mine a week ago and I am 33 weeks. And trust me there is a large amount of plug you have to lose and it can take several days or weeks to lose it all. Soon you will be going UHHH again? More? yes more and more of it will sneek out in little or big bits. The brown streaks is normal and even a tint of red is too. I always say it looks like I blew my nose in my underwear when I have a bad cold! LOL It is nasty but it is normal!

How soon after to lost you mucus plug did you go into labor?
Q. I know it could still be days or weeks, but I lost some of mine last night and just lost some more today. I feel kind of crampy, but no contractions really or anything and I'm just curious about other woman's experiences. Also do you have to be dilated to lose your mucus plug? At my appointment on Friday I was not dilated, but my cervix was soft and facing out. Also I was induced with my first a week late and if I make it to this Fridays appointment they will most likely induce me because my baby is measuring big... I'll be 39 weeks on saturday
Asked by Mom 2 Eddie-2.5yrs +Ethan-12mons - Mon Feb 2 11:51:56 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You don't have to be dilated to lose your mucous plug. It's hard to say if losing your mucous plug will even cause labor to occur. I lost mine and my water broke within the same day, but I was not dilated and did not go into labor for 12 hours before they decided to induce me. It really depends on your body and what will happen. Sorry that I do not have more information for you, but it is never consistent.

How long after your mucus plug comes out will you most likely go into labor?
Q. I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant, and ready to have this baby! A couple weeks ago, my doctor gave me an exam and figured out I was 2 cm's dilated and the baby has dropped; she also told me the baby will be coming in a week or two. It's been two weeks now, and still nothing. My mucus plug came out within a period of 3 days, this happened about a week ago. I get contractions all of the time, but still nothing! Does anyone know when I will most likely go into labor?
Asked by natashaiera - Sun Aug 9 21:28:45 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It could be any time, or it could be weeks. The body will simply make another mucus plug in 24-48 hours; this time it'll be a bit bigger because of the dilation. Then you might lose that plug when you dilate to 3cm, and the body will just make another one to plug the gap :) Sorry to be vague, but it's kind of 'hit and miss' as to when you'll start labour. Not long to go now though!

How long will it take to go in labor after losing your mucus plug?

A. Sounds like part of your plug. When I lost a part of mine(38 weeks), I started having contractions and two hours later went right into labor. But remember everyone is different because I have friends who lost their plug a week before they went into labor. Good luck!! I am sure you are close.

A. You can lose and reform your mucus plug. Generally if you lose your plug and labor (real labor with contractions that increase in frequency, length and strength) doesn't start within 3 days your body makes another one. You can walk around at 3 cm dilated for weeks. In fact, many women are pregnant with their 2nd child (or subsequent children) are dilated several centimeters for the last few weeks of their pregnancy. Prelabor can go on for days. In prelabor you'll have contractions that are painful/intense and may even occur in a pattern but they don't get longer, stronger and more frequent. They often start up and stay for a while and then peter out. It's your body's way of gearing up and your uterus is getting coordinated. The best… [cont.]

A. You won't feel the mucus plug forming so any pain isn't coming from that. It could be implantation cramping or simply the growing of your uterus. Check with your OB to ease your mind! Congrats!!

A. Some women will lose their mucous plug or part of their mucous plug weeks before they go into labor. Losing your mucous plug does not always mean labor will begin shortly. Keep in mind that even if a woman has begun to dilate, it may be weeks before she actually goes into labor. However, if you notice blood tinged mucous before your thirty-sixth week of pregnancy or if you see more than a few spots of blood, notify your doctor right away. Having sex or a vaginal exam can disturb your mucus plug and cause you to see some bloody discharge even when labor isn't going to start in the next few days. The pains you are feeling are more than likely Braxton Hicks contractions. Braxton Hicks can signal pre-labor, during which time your cervix ripens… [cont.]
