What can I do to get rid of Post Nasal Drip?
Q. For about a month or so, I have had Post Nasal Drip likely due to an unknown allergy. I have tried Benedryl, and throughout the month, I have gone through an entire bottle. It helps, but only temporarily. Also, as a typical symptom of Benedryl, it makes me drowsy and burns my nose. What can I do?

A. I take a medicine like Sudafed PE - it helps dry out the liquid that is causing your PND. If you wake up with a really sore throat, take it before you go to bed. You can also try soothing your throat with peppermint tea sweetened with honey. Taking allergy meds is also helpful- fall is a big allergy season (I have allergies right now). You could try claritin if benedryl makes you too sleepy. You could also try zyrtec, but that can make you sleepy too (it makes me sleepy). Look for generic/store brand versions of the drugs - waaay cheaper and in my experience just as effective.

How can i keep my nasal passages clear while sleeping?
Q. I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine, but i am still not sleeping well and i'm pretty sure it's due to the fact that at least one of my nasal passages is blocked during sleep. I been prescribed Nasonex to help but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Can anyone suggest anything else that might help keep my nasal passages clear?

A. You might want to try sinus rinses. You can buy kits with bottles and prepared saline packages either at pharmacies or Walmart etc. The two major brands seem to be Ayr and Neil Med that use bottles, but you might also find Neti pots for the same purpose. i've been using this for about a year now, after having been subscribed nasal sprays, and find this to work much better for me without the side effects nasal sprays and other medication can have. The rest of my family (allergy sufferers) were hesitant to use this, but after they gave it a try they all rinse as needed now.

Does the nasal cavity eventually lead to the brain?
Q. How far up from the nasal cavity is the brain? Is the brain accessible from the nasal cavity, or is it surrounded by skull?

A. The nasal area is an opening in the skull, so you can reach the brain through the nose.

Why doesnt using a saline nasal doesnt work all the time?
Q. Sometimes when i have a sinus headache i will do a saline nasal rinse using a nasal spray. Sometimes this doesn't always work and i would like to know why. Isn't the reason i am having a sinus headache because my sinuses are swollen bc of the irritants that are in them? If i wash the irritants out then that should take care of the swelling am i right? Why doesn't using a saline nasal spray always work to alleviate my sinus headaches?

When using my Nasonex nasal mist for allergies how deeply should I inhale?
Q. I'm starting to use Nasonex and wondering if I should inhale to the point it is contained in my sinuses or till it post nasal drips. Also when is the best time of day? I'm still waiting for allergy testing so I don't know what i'm allergic to. When is the best time to rinse my sinuses 2x a day, before or after I mist ? Thanks for any advice.

A. With the nasonex you want your head forward (looking down at the ground) and the applicator just inside your nose. You want a gentle sniff-the medication needs to be sniffed into your sinus's not down your throat. Sinus rinses are best before the nasonex (I imagine one morning one nighttime). We take nasonex in the morning cheers cmf

Q. I live in India and can not buy Neti-pot and all of these that are available in other countries. Can you please recommend a nasal irrigation thing I can create and use at home without going out and buying kits?? Also, please let me know how to use this. I am pregnant and am having a lot of sinus problems and just finished amoxicillin and don't want to have to use it again. This is why this is important to me. Thanks!

A. If you can go buy any nasal spray at the store, then do that , empty the container wash it well, then fill it with saline solution, unless you can already buy a saline solution spray, Saline is buffered salt and water. Regular salt works but it burns a little. But the key is having a container to use. Then you have a couple of choices, first you could try to use it just as a spray. If that does not give you enough relief then you can use it as a rinse where you spray it into one side of your nose and have the solution discharge out the other side. Can you order neil med squeeze bottle and salt packets online?

What is a good remedy for nasal allergies?
Q. The only thing I have found that works for me is Benedryl, but that knocks me out. Pseudofed just makes me loopy, with a runny nose. Clariton and Allerest have zero effect, like taking a placebo. I can't handle nasal sprays, but even if I could, I can't breath in to take them anyway.

A. Hey, I have suffered from the exact same problem. I used any over the counter medicine I could get my hands on-including nasal sprays-nothing worked. I found a recipe for a homeopathic nasal spray on a website and tried it-it worked almost instantly. To make it, use about 8 oz. of warm distilled water, a pinch of kosher salt, and a pinch of baking soda. Buy one of those little nasal bulbs that you use on a baby and suck the solution up and then hold one nostril and squeeze it into the other one and hold it for a few secs. It will start to break that stuff up and you'll be able to actually breathe through your nose again!!

What to do with nasal conjestion for 2 weeks?
Q. I have had nasal conjestion since Christmas morning. It's not uncommon, yet this time it seems that only 1 nasal passage is blocked and when I sleep the other nasal passage gets stuffy so I am waking up, yet when i blow my nose nothing comes out and after a few minutes of sitting up the usually clear passage is finally cleared again. Is it time to see a doctor, or should I just wait it out a little longer?

A. Smoking can be a huge factor, since you're inhaling. Other causes could be unhealthy working living environments where you may breathe in carcinogens. Snorting drugs like cocaine could cause it too, since you're wearing down the protective tissues in your nasal cavity. If you think you have it, see your doctor, they can do a CAT scan or MRI

How much colloidal silver should I put in a nasal rinse solution to use in a neti pot or squeeze bottle?
Q. I already have a lot of information about the pros and cons of this therapy. Is there a knowledgeable person out there who can tell me how much Meso silver to put in a saline nasal irrigation? I would think maybe a drop or two...
Asked by Old Gamer 56 - Wed Jun 25 11:55:00 2008 - Alternative Medicine - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Several silver companies sell colloidal silver to be sprayed directly into the nose or on a burn. There is no need to dilute it. If I were going to use it in my nose, I'd use the netti pot first, get rid of excess water, then use the silver "neat," one or two drops in each nostril. Putting it in the irrigation solution will help sterilize the water, but otherwise is pretty ineffective, I think. I've used 500 ppm silver "neat" in my eyes to heal a stye and in my cat's eyes when he had bad allergies. Also have sniffed it into my sinuses for infection.

How many nasal conchae are there in the skull?
Q. I'm very, very confused. Gray's Anatomy lists two inferior nasal conchae in its introduction to the skull. Later, in a diagram, both a middle concha and an superior concha can be seen. If these are also in pairs, that would mean that there are six nasal conchae in the face, which would put my count of bones in the human body at 210, rather than the correct 206. What's going on?
Asked by ScarecrowEyes - Tue Mar 31 18:13:49 2009 - Medicine - 2 Answers - Comments

A. There is only one PAIRED bone that is called the Inferior Nasal Concha. The other two concha are bony landmarks of the Ethmoid bone which is also paired. They are the, Superior nasal concha of the Ethmoid Bone, and the Inferior nasal concha of the Ethmoid bone. Hope that helps

What to do about nasal congestion in my two month old?
Q. My two month old has had nasal congestion for about a week now. She doesn't have any mucus running out of her nose and I don't get much to come out when I use a bulb syringe. I have tried putting saline drops in her nose, but doesn't seem to help much either. Should I be concerned that it isn't going away. Does anyone know why she might be having this problem for so long.

A. Your little one may have seasonal allergies. Would you happen to have a real Christmas tree up right now? The nasal aspirators are nice. Running a humidifier in the room at night with some Vick's designed for use with one. You shouldn't be concerned unless the mucus you are getting from the nose is greenish in color. It should be clear. If it doesn't clear up contact your Pediatrician.
