Q. Where does it come from? Is it just mucus moved up the trachea by ciliiated epithelial cells (total guess) and if so where does the mucus come from in the first place?

A. The paranasal sinuses are joined to the nasal cavity via small orifices called ostia. These become blocked relatively easily by allergic inflammation, or by swelling in the nasal lining which occurs with a cold. If this happens, normal drainage of mucus within the sinuses is disrupted, and sinusitis may occur. Mucus is a slippery secretion of the lining of the mucous membranes in the body. It is a viscous colloid containing antiseptic enzymes (such as lysozyme) and immunoglobulins. Mucus is produced by goblet cells in the mucous membranes that cover the surfaces of the membranes. It is made up of mucins and inorganic salts suspended in water. Phlegm is a type of mucus that is restricted to the respiratory tract, while the term mucus refers… [cont.]

is snot your bodys way of combating a viral invader or is the virus simply using to reproduce & spread itself?
Q. When you catch a cold, you get a runny nose. Is snot your body s way of combating a viral invader, or is the virus simply using you to reproduce and spread itself? The common cold generally doesn't land you in bed: is this evidence of you're own abilities to "fight" the virus, or is the virus manipulating you to maximize its exposure to uninfected individuals?
Asked by pnoy80 - Thu Mar 5 12:58:08 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Both, actually. Mucus precents the bacteria and virus from causing an effective infection, and continiously washes it away, but then provides an effective vector to infect other organisms as it is expelled from you.

How do you get your dog to quit pressing her nose on the slider glass and smearing snot on it ?
Q. I can't take my husband complaining anymore about this. The dog has the worst snot nose but I always clean the window and she loves to watch out the door and it is funny to watch her smash her nose up against the glass.

A. Get some tin foil and crinkle it up, then flatten it out slightly. Tape it to the door window right were she would rest either her paws or face. Don't cover the part were she can see out of. The idea is that you want her to go and do it so if you cover it all the way she won't do it until you uncover it. Anyway, dogs HATE the feel of crinkled up tin foil and once they get the idea of equating the door window as something that doesn't feel nice you can then remove the foil. If you see her attempting it again do the same thing. Eventually she'll give up knowing that you will put the nasty feeling stuff right back again. Jay

Why have I been puking up a layer of mucus or snot every morning?
Q. for a week now, about a half hour after I have woken up I have felt the need to puke, gone to the toilet, and puked up a clear-ish layer of snot or mucus up into the toilet. I then have dry heaves for a few minutes. I know that I have more in my stomach than just this goo. Please help!

A. You may be experiencing post-nasal drip while you sleep. When you sleep, the snot in your nose drips down to the back of your throat, you swallow most of it, at because you are breathing, some of it gets dried or thickened in the back of your throat. So when you wake up, your body feels this matter in your throat, which makes you gag and throw up. And throwing up slimy icky stuff probably makes you even more nauseous when you have to see it and feel it coming up. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to loosen the mucus. Keep some water by your bedside so you can drink if you wake up during the night. If you do not have a cold, then the mucus may be from some other condition - I forget what it is called, but it's where your body… [cont.]

Why am I having dried up bloody snot every morning when I wake up?
Q. Every morning I wake up I can feel that my nose is full of dried up snot. I go to the bathroom and clean it out; then I feel fine. I do not have have a stuffy nose in the morning or at night but, my nose just feels full of this dried up blood snot until I get it out. I do not have any bloody noses during the day either.

A. It sounds like you probably have a low-grade, chronic sinus infection. It's even more likely if you use air conditioning. A neti pot and saline solution, rinsing your sinuses once daily, can make a huge difference. Since you're noticing this in the morning, I'd suggest doing it shortly before bed. BTW, my otolaryngologist (nose doc) recommends the neti pot, so long as you're faithful about cleaning it properly. If the whole idea makes you wary, try a saline nasal spray--no medications, just a saline solution sprayed into each nostril.

When I drink alcohol at night, the next morning I'll wake up and have blood in my snot?
Q. Seriously, no fist fights, banging my head into walls or anything. I just wake up and blow my nose and either there's dried blood attached to dry snot, or long strains of blood in my mucus membranes. Allergic reaction? Internal bleeding aggravated by alcohol? Thanks.

A. It's due to the dry air. I'm guessing you live in Cali, perhaps you have gas heat. Try using a humidifier in your room. This would happen regardless if you consumed alcohol or not. If condition persists, try drinking scotch.

How quickly does the nose produce mucous/snot?
Q. When I blow my nose, it sometimes seems to refill very quickly and I need to re-blow it again. Other times it does it very slowly. Why is that--how quickly can the nose produce snot?
Asked by Steve J - Tue Jul 10 12:00:01 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. We produce about 1.5 liters of mucus in the nasal cavity daily. We normally do not notice this because tiny hair like structures on the cells lining the mucosa called cilia move the mucus down our throats. This is so that nasty stuff we breath does not get into our lungs, the trachea also has cilia that moves the mucus up the trachea in down our throats. Again to keep stuff out of the lungs. When you have an allergy, or cold the cilia become die off and you have less of them to move all this mucus. This is why the nose runs. It is not unlike when you go outside in really cold weather, the cilia become paralyzed due to the cold and your nose begins to run, when you warm up they once again begin working and things return to normal.

The process is kind of odd, but I've heard a lot of good things about it. It's effective. Oh, and be careful blowing your nose so often. If you're blowing too hard (trying to get the mucus out as much as possible, which is understandable) you may get an ear infection. Just try dabbing your nostrils with a soft tissue or blowing your nose really lightly. One thing that helps me loosen up the stuff in my nose is if I eat something spicy. A. You can get some saline nose drops to help with the sinus congestion. Just keep at her with the Kleenex to keep the worst of it at bay. As for taking her to the doctor, I really don't think you need to. If the mucous is clear and watery, things are fine and antibiotics aren't needed. If the mucous is thick and green or yellow, she may have sinusitis (an infection) and may need antibiotics. Remember, colds are caused by a virus and cannot be treated by antibiotics. Also, sinusitis (also rhinosinusitis) can be caused by a virus, a bacteria, or allergens. As long as she has no fever, and the mucous remains nice and clear, she is perfectly fine. Also, runny noses in kids are very common. My daughter is two and every once in a while… [cont.]
