A. "Snot" is just another word for mucus. When bits of stuff get stuck in your nose hairs, it s the mucus or snot that surrounds the stuff and traps it. Mucus is made by mucus membranes. Your body has mucus membranes in all sorts of places: the stomach, intestines, nose, lungs, eyes, mouth, and the urinary tract all contain mucus membranes that secrete mucus. When you have a cold, the linings of your nose and / or throat swell. Thick, clear liquid called mucus forms and its purpose is to wash away the germs. The mucus builds up and blocks the air passages. This is what causes a stuffy nose and a cough. :] i really hope you get better x3

How come when it is cold out you start to get snot in yout nose. Serious question!?
Q. I have always wondered how come when i go outside during winter i get more snot that i did when i first when out?
Asked by Connor B - Tue Nov 7 11:11:39 2006 - Respiratory Diseases - 2 Answers - Comments
A. good question... just looked it up... When cold air is inhaled, the blood veins or capillaries in the nose constrict. After a short period of constriction the capillaries dilate or expand again naturally. This process encourages the release of mucous from adjacent glands and we end up with a runny nose.

How can I control my snot while crying?
Q. Normally I'd blow my nose, but I am in a play in which I cry and my snot POURS out of me, no breaks for blowage. Is there anything I can try to keep the snot under control (and in my nose) while I cry onstage?
Asked by Anne - Tue Jun 1 09:34:46 2010 - Other - Health - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Practice with tissues, handerchief, or what's available. When you start to cry, continue to hold your head down to keep the snot and tears under control with the cloth or tissue. Jerk your head up often to show the audience your dismay, and the put it back down again, wiping tears and snot away, then back up with a straight face, only to burst into tears once more. make it look natural. Most people do lose nose drippings when crying. Just let them run and wipe.

Q. I have had cold symptoms for 4 days and thick green snot for 2

A. First day!! Green indicates infection. Remember, clear is normal, yellow indicates cold or allergy but green always indicates an infection. You might also notice a smell to it as well. Get an antibiotic.

What do you think about sucking snot out of your kid's nose?
Q. It seems like it may be normal in Japan to suck the snot out of your kids nose with your mouth and then spit it out. I was just wondering what others think about this and if it's common in America too.

Does snot come flying out of your nose as you swim?
Q. It might be a little gross to think about but when I'm swimming snot is accidently blown out of my nose. Then by the time I have swam the length, sometimes the snot that had been attached to my face is gone. I guess it is somewhere in the water. It is a little uncomfortable to think of this since I often accidently swallow some water.
Asked by creeper1 - Sun Jul 3 20:52:42 2011 - Swimming & Diving - 3 Answers - Comments
A. Crooked calm down, Chlorine is there to kill any bacteria, I swim 7 times a week and this normally happens to me when ive got a blocked nose or just have snot in my nose. Next time you have a blocked nose, try washing your face and maybe letting some water go to your nose, you will notice it washes out the snot. This is exactly what happens in a swimming pool. If you think this is gross, well every time your in the sea your swimming in fish poo with no chlorine!

How come you can't smell snot when it's in your nose?
Q. When you need to blow your nose or you feel some snot in your nose there is no smell. But if you blow your nose you can sometimes smell a slight odor. Also in this situation the nose isn't filled with snot, it just has some so there's nothing blocking the air passages and blocking your sense of smell.

Why have I been puking up a layer of mucus or snot every morning?
Q. for a week now, about a half hour after I have woken up I have felt the need to puke, gone to the toilet, and puked up a clear-ish layer of snot or mucus up into the toilet. I then have dry heaves for a few minutes. I know that I have more in my stomach than just this goo. Please help!

A. You may be experiencing post-nasal drip while you sleep. When you sleep, the snot in your nose drips down to the back of your throat, you swallow most of it, at because you are breathing, some of it gets dried or thickened in the back of your throat. So when you wake up, your body feels this matter in your throat, which makes you gag and throw up. And throwing up slimy icky stuff probably makes you even more nauseous when you have to see it and feel it coming up. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to loosen the mucus. Keep some water by your bedside so you can drink if you wake up during the night. If you do not have a cold, then the mucus may be from some other condition - I forget what it is called, but it's where your body… [cont.]

A. I have a really bad cold right now and it always amazes me how much mucus the human body can produce. The thing is, that is the body's way of getting it out of you. The more mucus you have to blow/cough out the better to get the virus out of your system. So BLOW!

is snot your bodys way of combating a viral invader or is the virus simply using to reproduce & spread itself?
Q. When you catch a cold, you get a runny nose. Is snot your body s way of combating a viral invader, or is the virus simply using you to reproduce and spread itself? The common cold generally doesn't land you in bed: is this evidence of you're own abilities to "fight" the virus, or is the virus manipulating you to maximize its exposure to uninfected individuals?
Asked by pnoy80 - Thu Mar 5 12:58:08 2009 - Biology - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Both, actually. Mucus precents the bacteria and virus from causing an effective infection, and continiously washes it away, but then provides an effective vector to infect other organisms as it is expelled from you.

Why am I having dried up bloody snot every morning when I wake up?
Q. Every morning I wake up I can feel that my nose is full of dried up snot. I go to the bathroom and clean it out; then I feel fine. I do not have have a stuffy nose in the morning or at night but, my nose just feels full of this dried up blood snot until I get it out. I do not have any bloody noses during the day either.

A. It sounds like you probably have a low-grade, chronic sinus infection. It's even more likely if you use air conditioning. A neti pot and saline solution, rinsing your sinuses once daily, can make a huge difference. Since you're noticing this in the morning, I'd suggest doing it shortly before bed. BTW, my otolaryngologist (nose doc) recommends the neti pot, so long as you're faithful about cleaning it properly. If the whole idea makes you wary, try a saline nasal spray--no medications, just a saline solution sprayed into each nostril.
